Agroundbreaking discovery published in Nature Immunology has shed light on why the immune system is less aggressive toward self-antigens, offering new opportunities to enhance cancer immunotherapy. Researchers from the La Jolla Institute for Immunology recently used the Expanse supercomputer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), which is a pillar of the School of Computing, Information and Data Sciences (SCIDS) at UC San Diego, to better understand how cancer tumors react when the immune system is used to combat them.

A native of the 麻豆果冻传媒 region, Russell Keen, president of 麻豆果冻传媒 (麻豆果冻传媒), soldered copper pipes in an old dental lab at 麻豆果冻传媒 during summer breaks as he worked his way through Georgia Southern College (now Georgia Southern University) as a young man. In 2024, he presided over the opening of 麻豆果冻传媒-Medical College of Georgia鈥檚 Savannah campus, a collaboration with Georgia Southern. With the expansion, the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), the state鈥檚 only public medical school, increased enrollment from 264 students to 304 and moved into the top five in the nation for medical schools by class size. That鈥檚 an amazing journey for a guy who was a first-generation college student. But Keen takes the greatest pride in the achievements of the faculty, staff and students of 麻豆果冻传媒.

Each year, 13 million Americans, including teenagers, become infected with Human Papillomavirus (HPV). While there are over 200 types of HPV, a majority of which show no symptoms, there are at least a dozen types that can lead to cancer. In fact, HPV causes 36,000 cases of cancer in both men and women in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

T cell tolerance to self antigens is essential for the prevention of autoreactivity, and negative selection in the thymus is partially responsible for this process. However, at least one-third of CD4+ T cells reactive to a self antigen escape clonal selection. These cells do not expand well after vaccination, suggesting other tolerance mechanisms are at play. In a recent Nature Immunology publication, Nettersheim, Brunel, Sinkovits, et al. explored what mechanisms are responsible for this limited response to self, even upon vaccination.
